BLOG FEATURE: National Senior Citizen Search For Ultimate ‘Gap Year’ Position

Retired UK citizens have a chance to secure the trip of a lifetime

comparethemarket.com has today announced a nationwide search to find a lucky retiree to set out on an all-expenses paid ‘Senior Gap Year’. With over a quarter (27%) of Brits admitting that they regret never having taken a gap year, the price comparison site wanted to highlight that it’s never too late to see the world.

The successful candidate will be chosen by mid-March 2018 before being given the opportunity to travel around the globe as the company’s ‘Senior Gap Year Advisor.’. The winner’s role will involve capturing a suite of content to be published on comparethemarket.com, showcasing their exotic travels to help inspire others.

To apply, hopeful candidates just need to be a current and retired UK citizen, and submit a 200-word personal statement by midnight on 12thFebruary 2018 here www.comparethemarket.com/travel-insurance/content/senior-gap-year-competition on why they would be the best person for this experience.

Amongst the reasons* why UK citizens often haven’t taken a gap year, the fact that they were ‘unheard of back then’ came out on top, closely followed by simply being unable to afford to take one.

To encourage candidates to explore as many countries as possible during their Senior Gap Year, the winning applicant will receive the latest camera equipment whilst being tasked with taking pictures, videos and writing a monthly blog post, all of which will be shared on the website, creating a fun and relatable guide for future travellers.

Comparethemarket.com experts will choose a shortlist of three candidates before the final decision is made by the public. Each shortlisted candidate will be challenged with submitting a short video explaining why they should earn a Senior Gap Year, and he or she with the highest number of votes will be packing their bags for the trip of a lifetime.

Stephanie Corbett, Head of Travel Insurance of comparethemarket.com said: “With Brits focussing on their careers more than ever, many have forgone the chance to take time off purely for themselves, to travel and explore the world. The launch of the Senior Gap Year competition is an opportunity for those retired to regain some of that travel time back – particularly since results showed that a quarter of the population regret the decision of not taking a gap year.

“Following on the success of our student gap year initiative last year, we wanted to open it up to those who are now retired, and have perhaps never been given the opportunity to explore the world care-free. With today being Blue Monday, there’s no time like the present to get people excited about 12 months of globe-trotting. Good luck to everyone applying!”
